Request Information FREEThe marine life in the waters of the Canary Islands presents great similarities to those of the Atlantic coasts on both sides of the ocean, it mixes with the Mediterranean, generating a panorama of great diversity of species but of populations with few individuals. Let Birding Canarias Boat Tours show you this wonderful world.
Thus, five species of turtles appear that arrive on our shores and that possibly nested in them at some point. Fish with just under six hundred different species are, along with marine invertebrates, one of the largest groups. However, both show a low rate of endemisms, with rare exceptions such as the blind crab of the jameos in Lanzarote.
With regard to marine mammals, although there were specimens of monk seals living in the Archipelago (Lobos Island), the most common mammals that swim in the inland waters and on the island's coasts are the bottlenose dolphin and the common , the common sperm whale, pilot whales and the common beaked whale, although almost thirty species of cetaceans are described.

The Canary Islands make up one of the areas in the world and the first in Europe where the greatest diversity of cetaceans is found.
Its importance is given not only by its variety, but also by its quantity. This richness is due to a combination of factors, such as the already mentioned physical and biological characteristics such as the temperature and the calm of the waters, the depth and the underwater relief, the abundance of food ... All this makes the Archipelago consolidated as a preferred destination for the observation and study of cetaceans.
In Canarian waters, scientists have identified 29 different species of cetaceans to date, out of the 80 known in the world, which represents 34% of the world's diversity and makes these waters very special and almost unique for the observation of these great animals.
Cetaceans with teeth or odontocetes are the most frequent on the islands. Species such as the bottlenose dolphin can be seen throughout the year. The first two even form resident populations. Sometimes the same animals have been seen for more than 10 years.
Other species, among which are the fin whale, the killer whale and the blue whale, are seasonal in nature and have been observed as they pass through the Canary Islands during their trophic migrations.
At present, cetaceans are seriously threatened, mainly due to the degradation of their habitat, derived from the pressure exerted by anthropological activity: maritime traffic, abandoned fishing gear, uncontrolled discharges that cause large sources of pollution and conducting military tests in the environment near your location.
Consult our services to spot these marine animals from a boat for groups and live with Canarias Birding Whale Watching an unforgettable experience.
