Description of Hiking in Sierra Castellar de los Bueyes

We invite you to practice hiking on the route of the Sierra de Castellar de los Bueyes and the Plaza de los Moros. These areas are located in the Cabañeros National Park, in the northwest of Ciudad Real and southwest of Toledo.

Our starting point will be in the town Horcajo de los Montes, a municipality belonging to Ciudad Real with less than a thousand inhabitants and located at 593 meters above sea level. The route covers 6.5 kilometers and the route will be circular, it has a gradient of 150 meters and a medium-low difficulty, mixing flat areas with some rocky sections, so it is recommended to wear comfortable clothing and footwear, or especially for this sporting practice.

During the route you will be accompanied by monitors who will explain the history of all the places you will pass through. The itinerary will be divided into two parts:

  • The first area in which we can observe the Mediterranean vegetation, where we will see all the typical variety of our land, highlighting the vineyards and olive groves, it will be possible to see that the passage of time has caused man to transform the countryside according to the needs of each time. During this tour we can see animals in their own ecosystem, such as hares, rabbits, partridges, or some of the deer family such as the roe deer.
  • Next, in the second part of the route, you will follow beautiful paths surrounded by plants such as cork oaks, strawberry trees, rosemary, holm oaks... a great diversity characteristic of the land of La Mancha

On the route you will be able to see impressive landscapes from the star point of the entire route, which is the Umbría Peak, known in the town as "the square of the Moors." Located at 812 meters high, it will offer us magnificent views of the Montes de Toledo, but that is not all, because we will be able to observe a variety of birds of prey such as the golden eagle or the black vulture. Also at that peak, you can see vestiges that belong to the Bronze Age.
