If there is something traditional in Portugal, it is the azulejo. With the aim of rescuing this cultural heritage of the country, in 1958 in Lisbon we created this museum, the Museu Nacional do Azulejo.
The unique collection of more than 7,000 pieces of tiles and the building where it is located, the old Convento da Madre de Deus, makes us one of the most important museums important in Portugal.
A journey through both the history of Lisbon and the history of tile art through the differentiating artistic expression of Portuguese culture.
The collection consists of tiles from all styles and periods, from the 15th century to the present day. But we not only house Portuguese pieces, you will also find Spanish, Dutch, English and Belgian samples. In addition, we exhibit ceramics, engravings and pottery tools.
Our museum consists of a multitude of rooms distributed over several floors according to the era, so you can observe the evolution of the tiles chronologically.
And so that there are no limits or impediments to enjoying the museum, our facilities are fully adapted to people with reduced mobility.
