Description of Trekking in the ring of Picos Massif Central
Explore the most characteristic landscape of the Picos de Europa, the Urielles Massif, also known as the Central Massif, nestled between the Cares and Duje rivers. This is the most aggressive mountainous terrain, with the greatest unevenness and which is home to the highest peaks, such as Torrecerredo, which with its 2,648, is the highest in the Cordillera or Picu Urriellu, emblem of the Asturian mountain landscape.
It will be 5 days, which we will spend from refuge to refuge and from peak to peak.
After the first meeting in the Arenas de Cabrales parking lot, we set out for the Poncebos Bridge, where we will begin the popular Cares Route, which brings together some of the steepest gorges in the world. We will arrive in Caín and stay at the hostel, known as the Diablo de la Peña. Here we recharge our batteries for the real adventure.
The second day will be intense, as we head to the Central Massif, covering a distance with a marked unevenness and in which we go up the Cares River, La Vega and also Monte de Corona, from where we visit the Chorco de los lobos. From here, we head to the Asotín Canal, crossing a beautiful beech forest, which will take us to the Vega de Asotín. From this place, we go up to what will be our refuge that night, Collado Jermoso, located in one of the most fascinating corners of the entire Natural Park. It will be like a reward for overcoming this hard day.
The third day will be characterized by high altitudes, since we will barely go below 2,000 meters. We will go to the star refuge of the Picos, which takes place at the base of the most famous summit, Picu Urriellu, on its most beautiful side, the west with its 500 meters.
On the fourth day, we headed to the Refugio de Cabrones, which is the base of the highest mountain, Torrecerredo. If time is on our side, we will climb to its summit. We will also climb to the top of Cabrones, on our way to the refuge of the same name. Next to this is the Collada del Agua viewpoint, from where you can observe the orange color of the Cornión Massif that it takes on at sunset.
On the last day, we will descend from the refuge to the Poncebos Bridge, for which we pass through the Amuesa Canal, until we reach the famous town of Bulnes. From this beautiful place, we go down through the Tejo Canal, until we reach the end of the experience, in Poncebos.
In the shelters we have blankets, so you only need a thin bag or sheet type. In them, you can also find a picnic lunch for daily excursions, without having to carry all the food.
