Escudero Wineries
Family business, currently being the fourth generation of winemakers and winegrowers. It was in the year 1852 when our great-grandfather, Juan Escudero, began to make wines (although his ancestors already cultivated the vineyard), in a winery dug into the mountain with a stone winepress and six oak vats of 250 cans each with a capacity approximately 24,000 liters. The produced wines were sold in skins (container made with goat skin and pitch) to the towns of the Sierra de la Demanda or Cameros Viejos, enjoying prestige among these towns. The production of cava It is however more recent, being the year 1958 when Benito Escudero Abad (current owner of the winery) began to produce the first bottles of cava, which is currently one of the most important products of the winery.
Location of the winery
Bodegas Escudero is located in Grávalos, a Rioja town with an ancient winemaking tradition, and located in the foothills of the Sierra de la Demanda. In the Cameros Viejos and at 700 meters above sea level, it enjoys a very special microclimate, with very cold winters and summers with warm days and cool nights. This difference in temperature between day and night in summer causes slow ripening that allows us to obtain acidic grapes, with very fine aromas, tannins that develop well and an adequate alcohol content. Essential conditions for obtaining high quality wines and cavas, whether they are intended for young products or for aging, reserves or large reserves.
Vineyards
The winery cultivates 101 hectares of family-owned vineyards : 80 hectares of red varieties Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Garnacha and Graciano and 20 hectares of white varieties : Viura and Chardonnay. Young, aged and reserve red wines are made with the red varieties and the Benito Escudero cava is produced with the Viura variety, with the Chardonnay destined for the Dioro Baco cava. It is on the family farm called "Cuesta la Reina" where the 60 hectares of vineyards are planted, although the farm has a total of 110 hectares, the other 20 hectares. They are planted on the farm "La Legua" in Pradejón where "Valsacro" is located. The remaining 20 hectares. They are scattered in small plots throughout the jurisdiction of Grávalos. The Finca"Cuesta la Reina" is a sun terrace of Monte de Yerga with stony terrain and calcareous clay and ferrous clay soils, poor in organic matter and with a high amount of limestone. The rainfall is low, with large drought cycles and an average of 400 liters/m2/year.The hours of sunshine are abundant, which favors the proper ripening of the grapes.
