Description of Bodegas Escudero

Escudero Winery

Family business, being currently the fourth generation of winemakers and winemakers. It was in the year 1852 when our great-grandfather, Juan Escudero began to make wines (although his ancestors already cultivated the vineyard), in a cellar excavated in the mountain with a stone winery and six oak vats of 250 sang each with a capacity Approximately 24,000 liters. The elaborated wines were sold in skins (container made with goatskin and pitch) to the towns of the Sierra de la Demanda or Old Cameros enjoying prestige among these villages. The elaboration of cava It is however more recent, being the year 1,958 when Benito Escudero Abad (current owner of the winery) began to make the first bottles of cava, which is currently one of the most important products of the winery.

Winery location

Bodegas Escudero is located in Grávalos, a Rioja town with an ancient wine tradition, and located in the foothills of the Sierra de la Demanda. In the Old Cameros and 700 meters above sea level, enjoys a very special microclimate, with very cold winters and summers with warm days and cool nights. This temperature difference between day and night in summer causes a slow ripening that allows to obtain acidic grapes, with very fine aromas, tannins that evolve well and an adequate graduation. Essential conditions for obtaining high quality wines and champagnes, whether they are destined for young products or if they are dedicated to aging, reserves or large reserves.

Vineyards

The winery grows 101 hectares of family-owned vineyards : 80 hectares of red varieties Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Garnacha and Graciano and 20 hectares of white varieties : Viura and Chardonnay. With the red varieties young red wines are produced, aged and reserved and with the Viura variety, the Benito Escudero cava is produced, the Chardonnay being destined for the Dioro Baco cava. It is in the family farm called "Cuesta la Reina" where the 60 hectares of vineyards are planted although the farm has a total of 110 hectares, the other 20 hectares. They are planted in the "La Legua" farm of Pradejón where "Valsacro. " The remaining 20 hectares. they are scattered on small plots by the jurisdiction of Grávalos. The Finca "Cuesta la Reina" is a carapace of Monte de Yerga with stony ground and calcareous clay and ferrous clay soils, poor in organic matter and with a high amount of limestone.
