Did you know that Retiro Park was built in the 17th century by Phillip IV who envisioned it as an exclusive area known as Casa de Austria. The area had been well maintained throughout the years and was in good shape until the Independence War when it suffered terrible damage due to it being used as a fortress by the French forces.

In 1868 it was declared as part of the public heritage and was opened to the public. This decision benefited it greatly and it continued to develop into what is today known as one of Madrid's "green lungs".

Retiro is also seen as an important attraction point, both for locals and tourists. It is compared to an open-air museum due to the generous amounts of activity going on inside its walls: it is a meeting point for locals, where they can do sports and socialize.
