Description of Route through besieged Madrid and the Second Republic
We are in the years of the Civil War, between 1936 and 1939, when the peninsular capital was under siege by troops opposing the Republic. These are intense and hard years for both the population and the architecture of its streets and squares that are involved in harsh attacks resulting from the conflict.
However, most of the fundamental pieces of this vital stage for the development of the capital still remain standing today. We will know what they are and what role they played with this guided itinerary,
- We will start from the Debod Temple as it is the old Mountain Barracks. We will observe the differences that separate that space from what we see today.
Later, we will advance towards the heart of the capital, to see what daily life was like behind the front lines of the Battle of Madrid. You will be surprised to discover that life continued, although with limitations: that the militiamen used public transportation to get to the trench, as if it were just another job. That when the aerial combats began, people came out to watch them, but without going too far from a subway entrance or any other air raid shelter. That the cinemas continued with their billboards, the cafes with their lively gatherings and the radio stations giving war reports, about which no one believed anything.
Meanwhile, the people of Madrid and foreigners who left their house early in the morning did not know if they would return safely to it...
