Where are the best fishing spots in Huelva?

• Punta del Moral: reformation work was completed on the breakwater in Punta del Moral in 2021 and since then it has become an ideal spot for sport fishing. As you wait for a bite on the hook you’ll enjoy the wonderful views either over the Carreras Estuary or towards the white-sand beach. What more could you ask for? This place lets you relax and disconnect from your routine, while keeping you entertained by the prospect of catching fish from seabream to conger eel. Whatever you bring up from the mixture of sandy and rocky beds is yours to take home with you. And if you want to mix things up a bit, just across the estuary lies the Isla Cristina - the prizes here are reserved for more experienced anglers, as the tides can be deceptive.

• Isla Canela: Cinnamon Island is a dream come true for lovers of surfcasting owing to its huge stretches of sand. It’s one of the windiest places in the Huelva region so we recommend fine fishing line, but sheltered from the wind, San Bruno Beach harbours a natural pool which is home to a multitude of species of fish. Before tourists arrive to go swimming, it’s a gold mine for surfcasters. If you’re looking for seabass, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel in Isla Canela.

• Espigón de Huelva: within easy reach of the regional capital, this spit of land is 15 kilometres long and is one of the best places in the area for spin fishing and surfcasting. If you don’t fancy walking all the way, we recommend riding a bike to the end of the spit where you’ll have your pick of open Atlantic ocean or the sheltered waters of the Odiel Estuary, your choice will depend on the kind of cast you want to set. What’s certain is that you're in for a treat - in these waters you can find everything: mackerel, bluefish, liza, bream, bass, sargo, pomfret and many others.

• Playa del Hoyo: another fantastic spot for surfcasting and spin fishing. We recommend a long rod with lightweight line and aerodynamic weights in order to reach the best waters. Gilt-head bream, white seabream and European seabass are the most abundant fish available here.

• El Rompido: if you’re after a variety of interesting species, look no further than El Rompido. Here you can hook common types of bream, as well as more unusual species such as the two-banded seabream, the sand steenbras, the spotted seabass and the black sole.

• El Portil: this zone has three angling locations. The West zone has still waters and as such doesn’t yield huge numbers of fish, while the central zone will give you a good day’s fishing when it’s not busy with swimmers. But it’s the East zone at the entrance of the Piedras rivers where you’ll find the best fisheries - seabass, seabream and other species are found here making their way upstream.

• Matalascañas Beach: although in summer fishing here is strictly prohibited during the day, be sure to grab your tackle as night falls. In the darkness you’ll be able to catch many species of fish and return home at dawn for a hearty breakfast.

• Mazagón: from the pier of Playa de la Estrella, Star Beach, the waters drop to depths of 50m, making it perfect for deep water fishing.

What species of fish are found in Huelva?

It all depends on the zone you choose, but the most popular prizes are the different species of seabream and seabass that inhabit these waters. But that’s not to say that more interesting species aren’t on offer. On the contrary, these waters are also home to yellow-fin tuna, marlin and host of other less common species.

In addition, specific environments such as Punta de Moral boast conger eel, black sole, cod, and mackerel populations. And if you’re craving shellfish, you can pick clams and cockles along the shore.

What’s the best time of year for a fishing tour in Huelva?

This depends on the particular fish you want to catch! Seabrean are most abundant in Spring and Autumn. Seabass `prefer the colder months of the year. Magre, a local delicacy, is a summer visitor. Huerva offers year-round angling opportunities, the best choice for you will be based on the kind of fish you want to catch.

Watch out! Remember that there are restrictions on fishing in certain places, usually prohibiting fishing at certain times of day. Isla Canela is a popular tourist and bathing beach, so fishing takes place during the night, and is forbidden 24 hours a day between the 15th of June and the 15th of September.
