What are the best spots to surf in Cantabria?

- Playa de Somo: this beach of more than 2 kilometers has the best conditions to learn or improve your skills. Along their beaches, there are different spots for each level. For example, in Langre, you will find 1-meter waves, appropriate for beginners, and in Santa Maria, you will find waves between 1- and 5-meter height, which are appropriate for expert surfers. All places are very well delimited and surf schools pay attention to be respectful of bathers. Close to Somo Beach, we find the Loredo and Galizano beaches.

- Playa de Loredo: located between two more beaches results in that the winds currents are not so strong, becoming Playa de Loredo a perfect place for surf beginners. There are 8 surf schools distributed in San Julián and La Salvé beaches. Playa de Loredo is about 2 kilometers long, a little bit shorter than Somo’s. Once there you will find 1-meter or 1-and-a-half-meter waves, mostly right.

- Playa de Berria: it is located between Monte Brusco and Monte Buciero and close to Santoña. It is an open and practical beach, and very crowded during summertime. Then, we recommend you visit it in another season of the year. It is about 2 kilometers long. To the south of the beach, you will find a nature reserve. The beach of La Playa de la Fortaleza is also close to there, although the access is complex.

- Suances: here you will find 4 different spots with 1 or 2-meter waves. The most typical one is Playa de los Locos, where you will find several surf schools. Its rooted surfing environment is reflected in the great number of surf schools and events that are celebrated in any year's season, including a typical party on summer Wednesday nights. This beach is about 1 kilometer long, and it is also close to the beaches of Tablía, Tagle and Playa de la Concha.

- San Vicente de la Barquera: it is a privileged area where doing surf whilst sighting incredible views of Picos de Europa. It hosts 5 different key areas to do surf in. The most important beach in San Vicente de la Barquera is Playa del Merón, which has several accesses also to Playa del Cabo, Playa del Sable and Playa El Rosal beaches. Other important spots to do surf are Guerra Vedreña, Tina Menor, Oyambre, Punta Liñera and Peñas Negras. Some of them are open beaches, then a higher surf level is required, because of the wind conditions. If it is your first surfing experience, we recommend you go to the closest area to the mouth of the estuary, called Farolillo, because of the constant waves and wind conditions.

- Playas de Liencres: these are the closest beaches to the municipality of Torrelavega. Their key spots to do surf are Canallave, Valdearenas and La Ria. These beaches are quite exposed to wind currents and usually have right and left waves. We recommend this place for surfers with an intermediate level of skill. At the end of the beach, it is located the Natural Park, which is almost 3 kilometers long.

- Playa de Noja: the areas of El Brusco and El Ris are found here. They have high tides and high-quality waves. On this beach, there are two different surf schools.

- And finally, Playa El Sardinero, which is in Santander, the capital of the province, and is in turn divided into other two beaches. Here you will find a surf school which also holds a shop selling surf equipment. It is an authentic pleasure for those who stay in the capital. Besides, when you finished catching waves, you will be able to eat something in the legendary restaurant Maremondo. You can also visit Bikinis, Mataleñas or Maruca beaches.
